Crossley Heath School Heritage Open Day: Saturday,
Crossley Heath School took part in the Halifax Heritage Festival on Saturday, .
2024 marks the 160th anniversary of the Crossley Heath school building, opened in 1864 as a school and orphanage for girls and boys. The name The Crossley Heath School was adopted in 1985 in recognition of the shared history from the founding schools of Heath Grammar School (c1600) and Crossley & Porter School (c1857).
There were artefacts and memorabilia from both schools for visitors to peruse which demonstrate the school’s significant place in Halifax’s history over the years.
The new heritage timeline project, erected on the ground floor over the summer as part of the 160th celebrations, depicts the rich history from Heath Grammar School days to the present time. There was also the opportunity to view important historical documents, artefacts and archive material and to share memories or ask questions about these.
Guided tours of the cellar were available on the day and visitors could wander around the corridors and view the main hall, the centrepiece of the school.
