Sowerby Bridge Morris Dancers write:
It is with great sadness we have learned of the sudden passing of our friend and founder member, Roger Maude.
Roger was one of several Scout Leaders who volunteered to pull the Sowerby Bridge rushcart in 1977, and again the following year. At that second event, after watching performances by Colne Royal Morris Men and Royton Morris, Roger along with Andrew Titley expressed their interest in starting a local team of dancers and subsequebtly, in late 1978, the Sowerby Bridge Morris Dancers came into being.
Roger eventually became squire of the side and continued to dance until the mid 1980s. He also maintained an association with rushbearing, serving as Treasurer and cart builder in those early years.
Our condolences go to Liz, friends and family.
Roger’s celebration of life was at Huddersfield Crematorium, Fixby on Tuesday and afterwards at the Four Sons Inn, Rastrick for pie, peas and a pint. Donations if desired to MacMillan Cancer Support, c/o Elland Funeral Services, Huddersfield Road, Elland HX5 9AH.
