The Heathen

The history of The Heathen is not straightforward. Thanks to Jim Farrell [Heath 1977–1982] we have an almost complete 1898 copy on which John Bunch [Heath 1972–1985] makes some observations.

But we have no subsequent copies of this publication. The next publication of which we have copies is The New Heathen from 1919 which is described as the ‘Magazine of Heath Grammar School Debating Society.’

Not long after this we have magazines with The Heathen clearly emblazoned on the cover but the title ‘The New Heathen. Heath Grammar School Magazine’ inside. It is only in 1931 that the title The Heathen becomes clearly established once more as the title of the school magazine.

The other issues from the 1920s to the very early 1940s were kindly loaned for scanning from the Crossley Heath Archive.
